Matsumoto Jun – Smile synopsis

A friend of mine had recommend an article written on The Japan Times and out of the blue, I went searching for Arashi news on the site. 8)Guess what I had found, an article providing a lovely synopsis of Smile.

…”Smile” (TBS, Fri., 10 p.m.), which stars Jun Matsumoto as Bito. In the day, Bito works at a food-processing factory and at night he moonlights at a bar.

One night, he notices one of his colleagues slipping some white powder to Yuki, a regular female patron. Later, Bito learns that Yuki has been arrested for possession of illegal drugs. The police come back to his place of employment, and Bito is afraid that he will somehow be caught up in the whole terrible affair.

Bito is so worried that he barely notices the young woman, Hana (Yui Aragaki), who has just joined the accounting department at the food-processing company. In a way, it’s easy not to notice Hana, since she has come down with an illness that has temporarily robbed her of her ability to speak.

It was only 1999 when five aspiring singers arrived in Hawaii with hopes of “Taking the music world by storm.”

After selling almost one million copies of their debut album “A.Ra.Shi” the newly established boy band from Japan’s famous Jonny’s Entertainment has begun to create a footprint on the music world that only stretch bigger with each passing year.

2001:
Arashi had their first nation wide tour that consisted of 26 sold out concerts around Japan. When they finished the tour, the boys moved to their own private label called J Storm with their very own private jet for traveling conveniently named Jet Storm.

2006:
With the 6th studio album, Arashic, Arashi’s international status rose. The album was only released in Japan (like all prior albums) but in various Asian countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea; where copies were all sold out. Due to their impressive popularity in Korea, Arashi was invited to the Asian Song Festival held in Seoul, Korea that year. Coincidentally, their arrival at Incheon International airport attracted an estimated 1,500 fans, resulting in the boys adding Korea as one of their stop on the Asia Tour that year. Arashi was the first Jonny Entertainment band to ever hold a solo concert in Korea.

2007:
Arashi returned to the Japanese market with a bang, all of their released singles topped the Oricon charts with “Love so Sweet” being the fourth single sold that year.

2008:
By the time 2008 came around, it was more shocking for the public when an Arashi single did not top the Oricon chart that year.
This year also marked the start of Himitsu no Arashi-chan ("Arashi-chan's secret"), the most viewed non-drama show in Japan of the year, proving that Arashi not only has status in the music world but also in the variety world.

2009:
Earlier this year, Arashi’s “Vs Arashi” game show was aired during Japan’s Golden Week, a special privilege only to TV shows with high ratings.
The group celebrated their 10th year anniversary with the release of a greatest hits album entitled “All the Best! 1999-2009”, which includes a hidden track “5x10” a song written by the members about their 10 years of friendship. A nationwide tour has been announced to follow up the album.
